Earthquakes: The Quake House

http://www.eq-iq.org.nz/quakehouse/
WALHT keep safe in an earthquake

Last week when Rachel was in Christchurch there was a BIG earthquake, it was exciting and scary. Good thing Rachel knew what to do to make sure she was safe.

We had a look at the Quake House on the Earthquake Commission house. You can see the effects of different sized earthquakes

We noticed:
  • The dining table was very strong and did not get damaged
  • The bookcase, hot water cylinder and TV were not secured and fell over - these were very dangerous and NOT a good place to shelter from an earthquake
  • The big earthquake caused a lot of damage - the chimney fell over and huge cracked appeared in the walls.

Check out the Quake House yourself and make an earthquake happen!

Staying safe in an earthquake

WALHT stay safe in an earthquake in our "What's the Plan, Stan?" Inquiry.

We listened to this awesome song by Julie Wylie that teaches us to drop to the floor, go under a table & form a turtle shape to keep ourselves safe.

Stop!
Drop!
Be like a turtle
Under the table
Away from the window.

Stay, still under the table
Wait 'till the shaking stops!

View from our Window

We are participating in the K-2 Flat Classroom Project.

Part of the project is to produce a huge online book of photographs taken by students around their school. The book will have photos from all over the world.

We brainstormed our favourite places around our school took our photos today using the iPod Touch.
