We each dressed up and brought a gold coin.

We also made some awesome daffodil hats and had lots of fun parading around the hall wearing them.

We looked awesome!
Congratulations to Hunter, who won a prize for his costume!

Skyping our Canadian Buddies

This morning we spoke to our K-2 Flat Classroom buddies in Canada using Skype.

We could see them and we could see a little image of us on the webcam in the corner.
"I felt excited" says Kiarshin
"I felt happy because I met some people from Canada" says Kaleb
"I felt happy because everyone was on the big screen" says Shakiya
"I liked to know their names" says Finn
"I liked talking to them" says Amy.

When we talked to them it was 10am on Wednesday. In Canada it was TUESDAY at 5pm at night!
The children had gone home after school and come back to school at night especially to talk to us!

The first thing we did was played "Four Corners" which is a game. Someone has to count to 5 and the class to run to one of the four corners of our classroom. We had the categories Birds, Insects, Reptiles and Mammals. The game was fun. They were the callers, our winners were Hunter and Finn. Next we showed them how to play Elastics. You need two people and you put the elastic around their ankles and the other person jumps. They also had an elastic in Canada. We need to finish our video to teach them how to play Elastics.

They also showed us their class pets. They were in a plastic container. We had no idea what they were to start with but they were caterpillars.

We asked them lots of questions too, like how old they were,  how many people are in their class and how big their houses. Most of the children are a bit older than us, they were 7 or 8 years old. We are only 6 and 7 years old.

They wanted to know if we had pets at home, if we had a class pet and how many playgrounds we had. They had one and we have 3!

Thank you so much to Mrs Nairn's Class @ Harold Hatcher School in Canada for speaking with us. It was great to 'see' you :)

Earthquakes: The Quake House

http://www.eq-iq.org.nz/quakehouse/
WALHT keep safe in an earthquake

Last week when Rachel was in Christchurch there was a BIG earthquake, it was exciting and scary. Good thing Rachel knew what to do to make sure she was safe.

We had a look at the Quake House on the Earthquake Commission house. You can see the effects of different sized earthquakes

We noticed:
  • The dining table was very strong and did not get damaged
  • The bookcase, hot water cylinder and TV were not secured and fell over - these were very dangerous and NOT a good place to shelter from an earthquake
  • The big earthquake caused a lot of damage - the chimney fell over and huge cracked appeared in the walls.

Check out the Quake House yourself and make an earthquake happen!

Staying safe in an earthquake

WALHT stay safe in an earthquake in our "What's the Plan, Stan?" Inquiry.

We listened to this awesome song by Julie Wylie that teaches us to drop to the floor, go under a table & form a turtle shape to keep ourselves safe.

Stop!
Drop!
Be like a turtle
Under the table
Away from the window.

Stay, still under the table
Wait 'till the shaking stops!

Our Class Handshake - Flat Classroom Project

We made a "handshake" video introducing ourselves to our buddy class in the K-2 Flat Classroom Project
They are from Canada.

We hope they enjoy learning a bit more about us!

Visit to the memorial

We visited the memorial a few metres away from our school to learn more about ANZAC day.

It has all the names of the brave people who lost their lives in the Franklin area.

Learning about ANZAC Day

There is a special day in New Zealand tomorrow,
it is called ANZAC Day.

We have been learning a little about ANZAC day and watching some videos to give us an understanding.

We were trying to build up a picture of what ANZAC Day might be all about as none of us knew!
First of all we watched this video called "The Last ANZAC Tribute"
We looked and listened hard and came up with lots of things we saw in the video.

We brainstormed all the things we saw in the video:

Next we watched this video which taught us a bit more about ANZAC Day. We stopped the video lots of times and discussed things as a class.

On Friday, we are having a BIG ANZAC Assembly at school, each class has to make a special wreath to pay their respects with.

Check out our AWESOME wreath!

Our Flat Classroom Buddies from Canada

Our class is participating in a new flatclassroom project, that will connect us with a class in Seattle, Washington and a Winnipeg, Canada for the next three months.

As part of this project, we were given the task of creating a classroom "handshake", or introduction to send to our new learning partners.

We got to watch the one sent to us by Mrs Nairn's class in Canada, you can watch it too below.

There were lots of similarities and differences between our school and theirs, and our class and theirs. We made a big list, check it out:
  • They have 477 kids at their school, we have 355.
  • They do reading, we do reading too!
  • They don’t wear uniforms. We wear turquoise polo shirts and navy blue shorts, skorts, long pants or tights.
  • They have a man Principal, we have a lady for a Principal. Her name is Miss Joplin.
  • They have a lady Vice Principal (DP). We have 2 lady Deputy Principals, they are Rachel and Mrs Holt.
  • They had snow outside. It is quite sunny still here.
  • They have blocks just like our blocks!
  • They have boxes with their reading books in it. We have our own book bags.
  • They have more children in their class than us.
  • They have 27 children in their class, we have 15!
  • They are very clever, they have had 100 days of school. We have had 43 days of school!
We are nearly fiished our class introduction and can't wait to share it with the other classes in Canada and  America!

K4S: We are persisting!

This week we are focusing on persisting!

This means that we try and try and KEEP trying until we can do things.
Persisting is a really important tool to have in your Learning Toolbox!

We watched this video of Ormie the Pig - he is so good at persisting, he just keeps trying.
Click the below video to see Ormie, it is funny!

How do you persist with your learning?

Our Room 5

This afternoon we spent a bit of time discussing as a class what was important to us in Room 5.

We wrote a big list of lots of words, these were about how we thought people should behave in our class and what was important to us as members of Room 5. We then chose 3 of the words that were the most important to all of us.

Take a look at our Wordle below to see what we decided on.

You can see that learning was REALLY important to us - we can learn at school and we can learn at home!

We also thought that using our K4S was really important - these are our Keys for Success and are all about:
  • Thinking
  • Relating to Others
  • Understanding Language, Symbols & Text (reading, writing, maths etc)
  • Managing Ourselves
  • Participating & Contributing

What do you think of all the words we came up with?

Graphing with TINS!

Today was mufti day and we each bought in a can/tin of spaghetti, baked beans or tinned fruit to support our Breakfast Club.

Since we are also learning about Statistics and graphing, we used the cans to make some bar graphs. We used our keywords of most, least and same to talk about our findings.

Check out the pictures of us learning!
